As 2010 came to a close, Graduation night had neared. Olivia Ruby was chosen to do the Valedictorians Address for the graduating year. Olivia worked hard to find all of the right words to say to her fellow classmates, teachers, friends and family. After giving her speech, it was found that she did in fact find more than the right words, she found the perfect words, and recieved a standing ovation. Congrats to all of the graduates of 2010!

Nadjiwan performed for an appreciative audience, showing off both his musical talent and his Aboriginal heritage. In the Fall, Espanola High School welcomed Holocaust Survivor and Honarary Dr. Eva Olsson. Eva Olsson gave a great presentation on hate, how hate hurts, and how she survived The Holocaust. After the fact, Wade Owl interviewed Eva so that people who were unable to attend the presentation would get a taste of the atmosphere.

A TWO minute video made by TWENTY students has earned Spartan Youth Radio a grant for TWENTY THOUSAND dollars from Best Buy Canada.  In the fall, Spartan Youth Radio produces "They Shuffled Amongst Us", a short zombie flick set in the school.  A panel of judges enjoyed the movie so much they gave us an award, choosing Spartan Youth Radio as one of only fifteen recipients across the country to win a $20,000 BEST IN CLASS Grant.

The Survival Horror genre has been evolving over the years. However, Dead Space refines the name and revamps the entire genre. You play as Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the USG Calvin sent to inspect a broken Comm array on the mining ship called 'The USG Ishimura'. The game happens in an over the shoulder 3rd person shooter style camera view, and the heads up display (HUD) is on the back of your character. You fight alien zombies called Necromorphs, and the only way to kill them is to cut their limbs off.

ABORIGINAL HIPHOP ARTIST PLEX aka DOUG BEDARD was intereviewed by Spartan Youth Radio reporters Kris Dickson and Brad Bourcier.  Plex is an emcee, producer, public speaker and advocate for aboriginal musicians.  You can win an autographed copy of his debut album BRAINSTORM by answering the following question:  does music do a poor job of representing itself and youth culture?  Listen to the end of the show for information on how to enter.

Holocaust survivor Eva Olssen visited Espanola High School to talk to the students and community about bullying. She told us that Hitler's Nazis were bullies and that school bullying is where they started. The message hit home.

Espanola's own Nich Piche and Kelsey LeClair teamed up to bring you this haunting recording of their critically-acclaimed single "A Taste of Solitude," recorded live in the Spartan Youth  Radio studios.

Derek "Skwirl" Forgie is a quintuple threat. He brushes shoulders with celebrities on a daily basis, is a respected standup comedian in Toronto, has a few notable tv commercials under his belt, is a tireless advocate for human rights and the planet and isn't afraid to dish the dirt on what he likes and loathes about working at MTV.

Jack Layton, leader of the NDP Party of Canada, opened the 102nd annual Massey Fair in Massey, Ontario, approximately 2 hours west of Sudbury. Spartan Youth reporters were on hand to ask Mr. Layton hard hitting questions about politics, the recession, the value of post-secondary diplomas and battling the apathy of young voters.

Shirley Cheechoo is an award-winning Cree director, actor and artist from Michigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island.  As founder of the Debajehmujig Theatre Company, one of the most respected independent Native theatre companies in the world, she has propelled aboriginal stories onto the stage and into film.  In 2008, Cheechoo won a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.

Though you might recognize Jake Gold as one of the hard-hitting and honest judges on Canadian Idol, he's best known in the music industry as one of the country's best managers, having won Manager of the Year three times.  He discovered the Tragically Hip in the mid 80s and is now managing Sass Jordan, the Cliks and Lily Frost.

Spartan Youth Radio reporters Jesse Dubreuil and newbie Brian Case got Jake Gold on the phone for an interview about Canadian Idol and his thoughts on Canadian music. 

Imagine an alternate version of history where plastic was never invented but we had the technology of today and the aesthetic sensibilities of a century ago.  Computers would be encased in wood and brass, we'd be travelling by airship and clothing would be made of leather, lace, cotton and hemp instead of rayon and polyester.  Music would be music, not commercialized clones.

Abney Park embraces the Streampunk lifestyle in their clothers (do not call them costumes), their musical instruments and their lyrics.  Hitting over 90,000 hits on a single YouTube video, Abney Park may not be mainstream but they are followed by fans across the globe.

SYR reporter Caitlin Dougon talked to lead singer Captain Robert on the phone from Seattle.  We have two versions of this interview: a 10 minute slideshow video and and an extended 24 minute audio only version.

On April 1st, 2009, action star turned politician Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger took time out of his busy schedule to visit the students of Espanola High School. Taking a break from shooting his newest movie, Absolute Recollection, which he is filming on Manitoulin Island, Mr. Schwarzenegger arrived by chopper and proceeded to the Spartan Youth Radio studios for a quick interview before signing autographs for students.

"Espanola, Ontario is different than Espanola, California but I like it here. The people are nice and I cannot get enough of the natural beauty. If I am ever terminated as governer of the great state of California, I might consider buying some land here," said Mr. Schwarzenegger.

Students were thrilled. "This is incredible! I mean, Arnold Schwarzenegger in Espanola? He's, like, my favourite movie star and I was really excited to meet him," said Joss Maguth, a grade 12 student and aspiring actor. Grade 11 student Chad Boursay was execting more. "He looks totally different up close. I was expecting the Terminator but he's just a normal guy. A little bigger. A little harder to understand with the accent, but still pretty normal. He could be one of my friends."

Autumn's Monologue comes out with their first single and their first music video: Bird Hitting Glass".  "Bird Hitting Glass" is an acoustic song written and composed by students from Espanola and area. 

Like all great founding fathers, Kenny, Ty , Zak and Chris had big dreams for their music but as things slowed down and they slowly lost hope, along came a muse, their spirit of art and her name was Jessi. She re-inflated their raft of hope and off they went. Ty, Kenny and Chris began creating incredible licks and Jessi and Zak began to produce harmonies like no one has ever heard. It was an all star line up from the get go.

Kicking off with their first EP “Quiet Is My Loudest Crime.”, The band is off to an epic start with an epic future.

"The Watoto Children’s Choir’s have toured internationally since 1994. These choirs bring a message of hope to many parts of the world which include countries such as Uganda, Australia, Canada, UK, USA, South Africa, Brazil, Israel, Germany and France. The choir is made up of children who are part of Watoto’s program.

Accompanied by adult choir leaders from KPC, Watoto’s performances are a soulful blend of African rhythm, contemporary gospel and ethnic dance. Through their music the choir share their unique stories and express their new found hope. The children’s energy and sincerity continue to inspire audiences all around the world.

The choir performs to present Watoto’s vision and to give audiences the opportunity to respond to Africa’s HIV/AIDSand war crisis.

‘Concerts of Hope’ are a lively demonstration of the life changing love of God experienced by the children of Watoto.

This experience, gives the children exposure to other cultures broadening their world view. It gives the children confidence and boldness and helps them to rise up out of their own situations of sadness and despair."

PERSONAL STORIES/ART/ABORIGINAL CULTURE. For around three decades, Ojibwe artist Brian J. Waboose has been using painting and sculpture to help heal from wounds inflicted upon him through his experiences in a residential school.  Physical, emotional and sexual abuse led Brian to drugs, alcohol and a loss of his culture.  Through his artwork, Brian works towards his recovery and to promote his Ojibwe heritage.

No one, I repeat, NO ONE had handwriting as cryptic and undecipherable as that of grade ten student, Madeline Lemire.  There are urban legends of the CIA wanting to use her code-making skills to encrypt their most secretive of documents but she didn't get the job (their human resources couldn't read her job application.)  In this episode, Madeline forces her friends and classmates to attempt to read one of her notes.  Enjoy.

Students at Espanola High School gathered in the Spartan Youth Radio to watch live CBC streaming of the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. Though the students are proud Canadians, they shared their views on what is already a pivotal point in their shared history. Mr. Stewart shares his ideas on his vision of Canadian Prime Minister who also happens to be First Nations, Inuit or Metis.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. In over fifty-five countries, campaigns are led by both men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys. In some countries it is a general public education effort focused on ending violence against women.

FEATURED BAND: Al Phlipp and the Woo Team.  Started in the 80s doing humorous music and parodies on consumer Casio keyboards, this Tennessee band now does mainly instrumental music, often with heavy use of samples from their own library of 80s music and improv comedy. The band has no label, never has, but just keeps making music.

 

As music gets more and more heavily produced, there's a growing group of artists who are experimenting with technology from the primitive early days of gaming.  8-bit can refer to a style of electornic inspired by the sound of old computer consoles from the 8 bit era of video games.  This music will often reflect sounds from technology that is seen as primitive or "outdated" such as the Game Boy, Atari and Activision systems and home made synthesizers.

DJ Anonymity (I hope I spelled that correctly) brings you some incredible retro-inspired music with new twists.  Take a time trip back to the 80s with FRESH CARTRIDGE, the first in a series called 8 BIT CHIPPER CHANNEL.

Jessi read the short story "Mirror Image" by Lena Coakley as part of her grade 11 University English course.  The story follows Alice, a teenage girl who dies but whose brain is transplanted into another body.  This realistic science fiction story warns us of the dangers that can arise when vanity meets medical science.

Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.

When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

The McGowan family consists of two parents, and seven boys - no daughters. And while Megan remembers all of the boys as being uber brats, she never expected them to grow into total hotties. Total hotties whom she's sharing a bathroom with. But Megan never realized that infiltrating a family of guys would lead her to find out so many strange quirks about all of them. And leave her crushing on more than one.

Now Megan has to try and fight her romantic feelings, communicate with Miller - one of the boys who happens to have Asperger's Syndrome, a type of Autism - and survive the McGowan household. Otherwise, she'll be headed to South Korea, where she'll have to wear a uniform to school."

On Friday, November 9th, two dozen hardcore gamers gathered at Espanola High School for one of two Halo Tournaments. After 40 minutes of battle, Raymond "Razer" Lavesque triumphed. Check back again for the outcome of this wicked event.
